UCSB First-Gen Faculty Initiative

UCSB's First-Gen Faculty Initiative is part of a UC wide initiative supported by the Office of the President that aims to support first-generation college students by identifying first-generation faculty members.

All students face a challenging transition as they begin college but first-generation college students face additional challenges navigating a completely new and unfamiliar culture. One way to help first-generation college students succeed is to create a sense of shared identity and connection. For a first-generation college student knowing that they have professors who began their own career as a first-generation student can make it easier to ask for help, speak up in class, or talk about careers in academia, such as research or teaching.

UCSB's First-Generation Faculty Initiative has the following goals:

  • Provide a sense of community, accessibility, and encouragement for first-generation college students by sharing first-gen faculty stories and perspectives
  • Provide resources for both first-generation college students and campus organizations and departments to help foster further connections between first-generation students and the campus community
